Tuesday night, Charlotte Motor Speedway was dressed in disco balls for Round 3 of the Cook Out Summer Shootout. Disco night gave us the tempo, pressure, and excitement that keeps the drivers hungry for more wins in the best part of the summer.
Much like Disco Music, the Young Lions were dancing in Round 3. Cautions came early and often as Case James found himself in front. James built his lead out as Brexton Busch looked hungry to catch him. For most of the race two battles were showcased; James against Busch for the lead, and Landon Thrasher against Colt Johnson for third. This dance would continue for most of the race, with James looking like it was his to win. Late cautions opened up the door for chaos, and chaos ensued. With three laps to go, a restart saw three wide at the front of the pack.
This allowed Thrasher to get in front for a moment before James retook the lead. In a split second, the front was reshuffled with Turner Brown out in front with three to go. As that happened, multiple cars were caught in a wreck, setting up a two-lap shootout to end the race.
As the shootout carried out, Thrasher was able to work his way through the restart, and into the lead of the race in its final moments. Thrasher got the lead late and brought it home, winning his second-straight race.
The main storyline from the Bandits division so far in the Summer Shootout, has been the battle between Roo Reaves and Maverick Bradshaw. Round 3 brought us another addition of this battle, as the two traded the lead for most of the race. Lucas Harrison had the lead early but lost it to Reaves after getting loose at the end of Lap 7. Reaves would hold his lead while maneuvering through multiple restarts, while dealing with Bradshaw and others behind him hungry to get the lead.
Restarts can be tricky though, as on Lap 10, Reaves couldn’t keep the lead, and Bradshaw got his opportunity to get out in front. The battle continued until late when Camden Powers and Reaves make contact sending Reaves back into the middle of the pack. This sent Anthony Pedulla into second, but Bradshaw’s lead was too much, and he won his second Summer Shootout feature out of three rounds.
After Jackson Jones pulled off a big win late in the race in Round 2, he looked to repeat his success leading the pack to green in the Outlaw Division. No lead is safe however, when Carson Sherman is in the race.
Jones was able to defend his lead against Carson Cauble, Lucas McFall, and Sherman until a caution on Lap 6 made it anyone’s race. The restart presented a wonderful two lap battle between Jones and Sherman going side-by-side multiple times, ending in a lead for Sherman on Lap 8. After gaining the lead, Sherman drove his car into the sunset winning the race with a second and a half lead, going back to victory lane.
The VP Racing Fuels Semi-Pro Division gave fans a shortened but physical race in Round 3. Dylan Faulkner had the lead from the jump, with impressive restarts on the plethora of cautions that came his way. Even after a lengthy red flag that ended the race of seven drivers on Lap 3, Faulkner’s speed could not be matched.
The final lap of the race saw the closest chance anyone had, as Cameron White got side by side with him on the restart, but under pink flag conditions, Faulkner had the lead over White and was victorious.
Two Pro Division races took place today, after Round 2 was postponed from June 9th. The Round 2 race saw a battle between London McKenzie and Ben Morabito for the lead. After early cautions, Morabito gained the lead over McKenzie, and built a gap from the group. Even with a caution on Lap 20, the speed of Morabito was too much for the group.
In Round 3, we saw the same battle take place early again, when McKenzie had the lead, and Morabito was trying to chase him down. Unlike the first race, this race went clean from green to checkered flag, and the long run speed of McKenzie was the best of the pack. Mckenzie led every second of the race, and the two teammates embraced in victory lane as the Round 3 race finished.
Ending the night was the Dilling HVAC Masters Division, which was dominated by one man, Robby Faggart. While Lee Jordan had the lead from the start, it only took three laps for Faggart to get ahead. He had Jeff Bolen and Jesse Bunnell behind him making his life difficult, but after the only restart of the race on Lap 5, contact between the two allowed Faggart to build and impressive gap. Faggart had a lead of a second and a half before dealing with some late lap traffic. From start to finish, no one could match his speed as he made his win look easy.
A physical Beginner Bandolero B feature proved that sometimes, consistency is all you need on the racetrack. Brody Solomito started the race on pole and was able to defend his lead while cautions piled up. While Ryder Stewart had a late run hoping to take the lead, no one was stopping Solomito from winning this race.
The Beginner Bandolero A feature showcased everything a race fan could ask for. Gio Anderlini led the group to the start of the race and had the pace early in the race. While he had the speed needed to win the race, Stetson Stroup, wasn’t going to make it easy. After a few early restarts, Stetson Stroup got the lead on Lap 5 after Anderlini spun coming out of Turn 4. Stroup kept the lead for the rest of the race and won with an impressive gap of nearly 2.5 second.
Both Chargers features showcased a dominant win, with drastically different ways of getting there. In the B feature, Braden Scott battled through a caution filled race, getting the lead at the end of Lap 7. He would drive away from the pack after each reset, with his lead getting as far out as 2.5 seconds. While the restarts gave everyone a chance, his speed was too much as he found his way to victory lane. The A feature, was a cleaner race that Finn Buckley found his stride in. After a strong lead early from Nicholas Newsome, Buckley also got his lead on Lap 7 and never looked back.
The 2026 Cook Out Summer Shootout continues with Round 4 on Tuesday, June 23rd. The gates at Charlotte Motor Speedway will open at 5pm, and the coverage on FloRacing begins at 5pm ET/2pm PT.
