If you weren’t sitting on the edge of your seat Tuesday, you may not have been watching the Cook Out Summer Shootout. To call Tuesday’s action anything short of a mix of chaotic and thrilling very well might be an understatement. A total of 14 green flags were waved with 11 different drivers visiting Charlotte Motor Speedway’s victory lane. Tuesday included the resumption of Round 2 races that had been postponed twice, and all of Round 3.
Tuesday’s action concluded with the Legend Car American Rebel Ale Masters Division, and it was the icing on the elbows out racing cake. The central focus of 25-lap feature was between the three front runners: Kyle Beattie, Kyle Busch, and Robby Faggart. On Lap 1, when Busch went three wide for the lead entering Turn 3, but Beattie was the eventual lap leader. Two quick back-to-back yellows happened on Laps 2 and 3. Busch was penalized a row by race control for jumping the start, resulting in him having to restart fourth, second on the outside, instead of second. Faggart was the beneficiary of the penalty.
Busch wasn’t shy about using the bumper and was back to second ahead of Faggart by Turn 3, but Faggart didn’t back down. He took Busch and Beattie three-wide one lap later, resulting in him taking over the lead. During a restart on Lap 10, Beattie moved Faggart out of the lead, making Busch have to tiptoe through the corner to avoid a major collision, as well as maintain third. One lap later, the trio were once again three-wide with Faggart taking back the lead and Busch moved into second. The next time around Beattie kindly moved Busch out of the way.
A few laps later, Busch had begun to lose contact with Beattie and Faggart, but a caution for a spin in Turn 3 looked to give Busch one more chance. He was able to move into the second during the following restart before a final caution flew on Lap 19. As the leader, Beattie ran wide and high bringing the field back to green, knowing that Busch in second couldn’t pass him to the left before the start finish line. With four laps to go, the final bumper was given when Busch moved Beattie to take the lead. Three circuits later, he captured his second 2025 Cook Out Summer Shootout victory in as many starts.
The Young Lions Division had a couple long green flag runs, but bumper paint was still exchanged. Spencer Bradshaw entered the night having claimed Rounds 1 and 2 for himself, leaving the field hungry for a piece of victory lane for themselves. Colton Hale looked to shove Bradshaw out of the way on the second attempt to start the race but a caution thwarted any attempt to capitalize. Hale would once again be right on teammate Bradshaw’s bumper as the field worked Lap 9, but that had brought Case James into the picture and soon Ben Morabito was back in the picture, too, as it appeared Bradshaw may have been holding up the field or just going fast enough.
The restart on Lap 12 was single file and Hale attempted to bump Bradshaw up the track entering Turn 1 but got bumped up himself by James. Both drivers lose spots as Morabito took over second. Hale and James exchanged bumpers on back-to-back laps battling for third before losing it to Colt Johnson. The race took a major turn when during a restart on Lap 23, Morabito tried the bump and run on Bradshaw and it worked for a straightaway. In Turn 3, Morabito was spun around. Upon video review, it was determined that contact from Johnson’s front bumper to Bradshaw’s caused Bradshaw to spin Morabito. All three were sent to the rear.
This resulted in Nathan Williams inheriting the lead. By the exit of Turn 2, Hale was the leader. James sent his Legend Car into Turn 1 with two laps to go but nearly missed it himself. Hale crossed under the checkered flag first, capturing his first Cook Out Summer Shootout victory.
There is no love lost after three rounds of the Dilling Heating, Cooling, Plumbing and Electrical Pro Division. As with Rounds 1 and 2, Tuesday night had no shortage of talent in the Pro Division. Tough and to the limit racing resulted in a crash on Lap 18 that resulted in three cars being taken off the track, and others in the hot pits. The following restart is when Jorgensen lost the lead when London McKenzie bumped him up the track. Jorgensen was stuck on the outside and fell back to fifth. The final caution was Scott McLaughlin being spun off the bumper of Lucas Vera on Lap 24.
A two-lap shootout was set up with McKenzie as the leader. Round 2 winner, Danny Chisholm, moved McKenzie up in Turn 1 but McKenzie held his own, keeping his car to the right of Chisholm’s through the exit of Turn 4 as Jorgensen was right on Chisholm’s bumper. Jorgensen dirt tracked his car through Turns 1 and 2 on the final lap trying to get to Chisholm’s bumper. Chisholm swung his car low down the backstretch to defend and dive bomb attempt by Jorgensen while McKenzie brakes late and prayed for his car to keep grip with the asphalt. In the blink of an eye, Jorgensen bumped Chisholm, moving the latter up, and Nick Woodall bumped into Jorgensen, sending him around. McKenzie was four car widths up from the apron as he turned the corner ahead of everyone else to win.
Brexton Busch may have won the Round 2 Bandits Division race earlier in the day on Tuesday, but in Round 3 he was going to have to work for it. The race itself ran 12 straight laps with Evan Johnson leading before the first caution. Busch and Roo Reaves had carved their way to second and fourth, respectively. Busch took the lead on Lap 14 but Reaves wasn’t ready to settle for second. On Lap 19, he took the lead from Busch on the inside in a power move but there was a caution on the final lap. This set up a one-lap shootout. Reaves got the restart he wanted and it was enough to force Busch to have to settle for second in Round 3.
Landon Thrasher once again made himself look unstoppable on quarter-miles Tuesday. He swept both Bandolero Outlaws features. Spirited battles were common behind him, including James Monolo, Rylan Speight, and Carson Sherman looking to be the driver behind Thrasher to capitalize on any mistake. Unfortunately, none came for the rest of the competition.
Heartbreak was the word best to describe the VP Racing Fuels Semi-Pro Round 3 feature, especially for Sam Butler. After an opening lap crash reset the field, Butler led the first 23 laps with no caution flags and was pulling away from Dylan Faulkner, after Faulkner had reeled him back to his bumper. Butler cleared himself during the restart and led Lap 24 but wouldn’t lead the 25th and final lap. To the shock of everyone watching, Butler missed Turn 3 and slipped up the track. Faulkner scooted by and won, unofficially leading only about a quarter of a lap. Butler did regain control to heartbreakingly finish second.
In a caution littered Round 3 Chargers feature, Cash LeCroy was the Booth34DieCast Fastest Qualifier and started from first and finished in first. He was declared the winner after only 10 laps completed.
The Beginner Bandolero drivers all ran two races. The B Features were won by Owen Price and Hagan Green. Joshua Penn Jr. dominated the Round 3 B feature. On the white flag, Penn and second-place Ava Boyd spun in Turn 2. That led to a restart with Max Rogers starting in first. On the restart, William Paez tried to take the lead but had to back out as he got into the turf. Then it was Green making the move in the final set of corners to win by 0.034 hundredths over Rogers.
Camden Powers swept both Beginner Bandolero A Features with Brody Zacharias giving chase in both features, and having to settle for second-place each time.
The 2025 Cook Out Summer Shootout resumes on Tuesday, June 24 with Round 4. Grandstands will open at 5pm and tickets can be purchased at CharlotteMotorSpeedway.com. Replays of the first three rounds and Round 4 feature racing can be viewed on FloRacing.com.
