The opening two rounds of the 2023 Cook Out Summer Shootout were not short of excitement! Emotional victories, photo finishes, and first-time winners highlighted the action at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Monday and Tuesday nights. Over 150 cars showed up to race, necessitating the need for B Mains. No shortage of action or racing for the fans in the stands or at home watching on Flo Racing!

-ROUND 1-

Boston Reed & Co. Pro Division

What looked like a land-slide win for Alex McCollum became a monumental final lap for the Boston Reid & Co. Pro Division and an emotional win for Cameron Bolin. From beginning to end, McCollum had most of the drivers in his rearview, it wasn’t until, the white flag waved, Daniel Wilk who too had his short-lived lead, crept up behind McCollum on turn four ultimately knocking himself and McCollum out of the running. Bolin, who battled the leaders all night long, saw an opening and snuck around to claim the checkered flag.

After four cautions and six lead changes, the Pro Legend Car driver honored his grandfather at winners’ circle as he took the Round 1 win by 0.002 seconds to close off the night with the first Pro division trophy of the summer.

“I wasn’t driving that car tonight; he was,” Bolin said of his grandfather who passed away on Friday. “To do this in Round 1 was pretty special.”

VP Racing Fuel Semi-Pro Division

The VP Racing Fuel Semi-Pro feature revealed the need for speed and patience as Charlotte native George Phillips kept his eye on the prize and ultimately prevailed. Adam Congrove and Preston Wrisley started the race head-to-head. Canadian Parker Traves, took the lead after an early red flag and kept the pedal to the metal, leading from Lap 2 through Lap 7.

Phillips worked his way from starting 11th to second place on Lap 8. Weaving through traffic, the young hotshoe used the inside line of Turn 4 to steal the lead and never looked back. The 13-year-old showed perseverance and skill to take home his first checkered flag in the VP Racing Fuel division.

“We started from qualifying in 11th, then we made our way through the field. I can’t believe it,” said Phillips. “It is so amazing to win at the Summer Shootout, it’s so amazing.”

Beginner Bandolero

Bryson Nichols qualified his black and yellow Bandolero on pole for the Round 1 Beginner Bandolero race, with the bright green Bando of Brexton Busch on his outside. From the start, Nichols was able to fire off faster, but took about a lap to truly hook up his car to the track. This was the window of opportunity for Busch to make a pass for the lead. Time after time, however, Nichols was able to defend his control off the race. The race ended under caution as a result of the time flag, with Nichols claiming the first Beginner Bandolero win of the summer.

Bandits

The invert to start the Bandits race sent pole winner Colt Johnson back in the field, but it only took him four corners to be back in the lead. In fact, the lead exchanged hands a few times in the opening lap of the race. He proved to be virtually impossible to touch. The best opportunity to take the win away would be on a restart, which Jack Smith and Wyatt Coffey attempted to every time but couldn’t make it stick. Surviving multiple restarts, one of the more valiant efforts against Johnson was on the final restart when he had to throw a block against Smtih as the duo exited turn two. One the final lap, Coffey would take third away from LaQuan McCoy as Johnson parked his Bandolero in Round 1 victory lane.

Outlaws

In one of the most spectacular performances in Cook Out Summer Shootout history, Alison Johnson proved that you could win on the outside. Her first moment of brilliance came after a restart where she drove her red Bandolero around the outside of Killian McMann. She quickly took control and soon negotiated traffic just well enough to keep maintaining control of her lead. Johnson was able to pull away but faded, allowing McMann to catch up. When McMann got alongside Johnson, the battle was on. For five laps, Johnson fought valiantly to keep her car wheel-to-wheel with McMann’s. At times it looked like she would have to relinquish her front row position to challenge McMann, but she would give up. Off the final corner of the race, the pair were still side-by-side and across the line was Johnson with a 0.0003 lead to win the Round 1 Outlaws feature.

Young Lions

The Young Lions opening feature was called short with 16 laps complete and Neal Dulin standing on the Charlotte Motor Speedway start/finish line. But early on in the race it looked like Jackson Denton or Max Reaves would be standing in victory lane. Denton led most of the way with Reaves hustling to stay close, before Reaves used the bumper to assist him taking the lead from Denton. A nine-car pileup on Lap 12 triggered by two cars spinning brought out the red flag to separate and tow of crashed cars. When the race resumed after a red flag, Reaves maintained the lead. Isaac Kitzmiller spun, putting out another caution along with the time flag. Denton collided into Reaves’ back bumper sending both up the track and causing the race ending caution. Dulin was declared the winner, Reaves and Denton finished 17th and 18th, respectively.

Masters

A pair of spins, one in turn two and another in turn four, on the first lap of the race necessitated an immediate restart. Robbie Woodall had taken the lead on Lap 1 before the caution and didn’t let go when the race returned to green. The race was only interrupted once more for a single car spin. Aside from the field bunching up on the restart, Woodall was not around the rest of the top five, until late in the race when Lee Jordan made a valiant effort to reach Woodall in the closing laps. He simply ran out of laps, giving the opening Masters Round in the 2023 Cook Out Summer Shootout to Woodall.

-ROUND 2-

Young Lions Division

The Young Lion feature let out the roar and rumble as Jackson Denton studied his way to the top, taking the checkered flag.

The race started with young pupils Cole Robie and Neal Dulin leading the way; however, distractions from the back of the class brought out three cautions, giving Jackson Denton his shot at the front. A late restart gave Denton, who had kept his nose in the books and his car in contention, the chance to take the lead and ultimately the checkered flag.

Keeping the students on their wheels, the top three drivers gave the class one heck of a presentation.

“Be smart, keep your nose clean, try to keep them off your bumper, be patient – that’s how you win a race,” Denton said of his race-winning strategy.

Boston Reid & CO Pro Division

Georgia drivers Garrett Gumm and Jensen Jorgensen led the way in the Round 2 Boston Reid & CO Pro race, but an opening lap caution meant a total reset. Behind them Cameron Bolin, Daniel Wilk and Alex McCollum tangled, putting Bolin, the Round 1 winner, and Wilk on the hook. Gumm and Jorgensen led the way but Jorgensen found himself in fourth, with Jacob Staten and Ethan Norfleet moving past. Gumm held on to the lead on a restart after Nick Woodall spun, but Norfleet wasn’t as lucky. He collided with Gumm’s right side wheels, causing him to bicycle his way through the Cook Out barrels. He spun around and kept going and the race stayed green. Gumm continued and held onto the lead, picking up his first career Cook Out Summer Shootout victory.

Masters

Dwayne Holder had never visited Cook Out Summer Shootout victory lane, until Tuesday night. He started on pole as a result of the invert and never looked back. Though, he had challengers. Early in the race it was Lee Jordan in second place, but he slipped up on Lap 9, allowing the faster Mark Green through. At halfway, Holder held onto a comfortable lead, but behind him Green was slowly closing in. A single car spin in turn four on Lap 18 bunched the field up for the first time. Holder was tested during two more restarts, but held a firm grasp on the lead that was able to be unlatched. His was, too, his first in the Cook Out Summer Shootout after years of trying.

VP Racing Fuel Semi-Pro Division

For the first 20 laps of the VP Racing Fuel Semi-Pro Round 2 race, the top two spots were a battle between Canadian Parker Traves and local driver George Phillips. Traves held the lead initially, until he slipped up allowing Phillips to take the lead. He worked hard to find a way back to the lead as the laps clicked away. The field was reset after Brody Gunter spun with nine laps to go after colliding with Mason Lastra’s right rear. Jesse Martinez was the first car on the outside on the restart and had a fantastic launch on the restart. It appeared to be too good as he overdrove turn one, handing the lead back to Phillips. A spin brought out the caution once more with seven to go and on the restart, Martinez and Michael Crafton tangled on the backstretch, with parts of their cars even hitting the catchfence. Both drivers were okay. The next restart was single file. Traves got to Phillips’ inside in turns one and two, before Lastra moved to his inside in turns three and four, but a quickie yellow brought out the caution. Lastra would inherit the lead when Traves and Phillips exchange too many bumpers for comfort, and pulled to a far enough ahead lead. Phillips wasn’t able to catch him, handing Lastra his first Cook Out Summer Shootout trip to victory lane.

Outlaws Division

It took the Outlaws race a few attempts to complete a single lap. Within those attempts, Ben Morabito was sent to the back for being involved in the caution. Once the race officially was underway, Finn Buckley and Hunter Morgan gave the fans watching from the stands and at home a spirited battle as the two race side-by-side for several corners. Eventually Buckley was able to clear Morgan just as three cars spun to bring out the caution. On the restart, Owen Zacharias fired off on the outside and took the lead, partially aided by Morgan slowing on the backstretch. Moments later, Alison Johnson, Buckley and Morabito were three-wide and as they exited turn four, a collision happened. It sent Johnson into the outside wall, and as she darted across the track, she tagged Ellie Gossett and Killian McMann. This caused Gossett to end up rolling over on her roof and spinning before landing on all four tires. Gossett was okay. Morabito wasted no time finding his way around Zacharias and despite two more cautions, never relinquished control for a moment, and he captured the Round 2 Outlaws victory.

Bandits Division

Round 1 Bandits winner Colt Johnson, had to fight to get to the lead in the Round 2 race, but it only took him three laps. Jack Smith dusted Carson Cauble on the initial start and held onto the lead until he missed the corner, giving Johnson the low line on Lap 3. Wyatt Coffey also slipped through, but Smith misjudged the speed of Coffey on the same lap. He drove right into the rear bumper of Coffey, sending Coffey around and ending his day. At the front, LaQuan McCoy gave Johnson plenty to look at in his mirror, but wasn’t able to make a move. McCoy was better into the corner, whereas Johnson was better exiting. Cautions didn’t deter Johnson, keeping McCoy at bay through a few restarts. Johnson won and McCoy was about to finish second, but was tagged in the rear by Smith, sending him around in turn four. Smith was penalized for the spin, elevating Mason Roberts to second and following a disqualification, Cauble was elevated to third. McCoy would ultimately finish fourth as a result and Smith fifth.

Beginner Bandolero Division

For Bryson Nichols, it was the same song, different round. He commanded control of the Round 2 Beginner Bandolero race. Several restarts occurred but none were ever detrimental to Nichols. Gerald White III and Allee Johnson were never able to make a move stick if they got close enough to try. Nichols captured the Round 1 win and added a Round 2 victory in convincing fashion.

Round 3 of the 2023 Cook Out Summer Shootout is Tuesday, June 20 with coverage of the racing action beginning at 5pm on FloRacing.
