After a wild opening night on Monday, Tuesday’s Round 2 Cook Out Summer Shootout at Charlotte Motor Speedway was filled with anticipation. Drivers wanted to earn a second victory, while others wanted redemption. The over 180 entries gave everyone even more examples on why you should tune-in and follow the Legend Cars and Bandoleros around America’s Home for Racing all summer long!
After a tribute to the late Kyle Busch, where his Legend Car was driven by his father, Tom, the Dilling HVAC Masters Division took the green with Brexton Busch waving the green flag and Jeff Bolen claimed the lead coming out of Turn 2 on the opening Lap. Early in the race saw a battle between Kevin Rollins, Brandin Wrisley, and Robby Faggart, looking to close the gap and Bolen and Jesse Bunnell in the front.
With some movement around the field, the drivers began to distance each other as the race went on. The long run ended on Lap 16, as Dwayne Holder spun coming out of Turn 2 bringing out a caution. The restart was followed by a big moment, as contact coming out of Turn 2 saw Bolen’s car flip, resulting in a red flag condition on the track. He was all the others involved were okay.
The race was brought back to green by Faggart and while his speed of the restart had him in the lead, Bunnell found the speed he needed to battle for the lead.
The battle culminated at the end of Lap 21 with Faggart and Bunnell going side-by-side, and Bunnell escaping with the lead into Lap 22. While Faggart didn’t make it easy for Bunnell, his late efforts came up short as Bunnell was victorious in the Round 2 feature.
Following suit of the first round, the Bandits Division showcased a battle at the front of the pack. Landon Solomito led the race initially, but it didn’t take long for Roo Reaves and Maverick Bradshaw to find their way into the leading two spots.
Reaves initially thwarted Bradshaw’s overtake attempts, but after getting loose at the exit of Turn 4 of Lap 9, Bradshaw gained the lead going into Lap 10. While the battling pair began to distance themselves from the rest of the field, multiple cautions on Lap 15 kept it anyone’s race.
The race came to a halt to attend to an accident, that included a flip, coming out of Turn 4. Coming out of the red flag saw the leaders of the race wreck coming into Turn 1 of the restart, moving Bradshaw and Reaves to the back of the pack.
After the front runners for most of the race tangled and were sent to the back, the new battle was between Tayton Monroe and Lucas Harrison. Their battle lasted until the final lap, when contact between the two brought out the yellow and checkered flag was displayed to Carter Clapp, who was declared the winner.
The question going into tonight’s race was could anyone keep up with the Outlaw Division’s national point leader, Carson Sherman. Sherman got his lead early after going three-wide with Jackson Jones and Josh Davenport. Although Sherman dominated most of the race, a caution flag late in the race opened the door for Jackson Jones in a one-lap-shootout. Jones found pace on the back stretch of the final lap getting side-by-side with Sherman as he dealt with an issue with his rear tire. An emotional Jones took the win showing the race is never over, until it’s over.
A caution-filled Young Lions race saw late drama decide the winner. Brexton Busch started on pole and had the pace for a majority of the race. A long red flag with 6 laps to go made it anyone’s race. Coming out from the red flag, Busch kept the lead until a late run from Landon Thrasher. Thrasher made his move in Turn 3 of the final lap to get the win right at the end, redeeming himself from the previous night.
Capping off the night was the VP Racing Fuels Semi-Pro Division, which showcased a packed field all hungry to find their way to victory lane. The battles started early, as from the jump, Cameron White got the lead with Trent Dillard following close behind him. Cautions shook up the order with Colton Hale, Mitch Wright, Maddox Hooper, and others fighting for top 3, and to catch White. The pink flag was shown on lap 19, as Hale began his chase for White. Hale gained the lead on Lap 22 after a nice move coming out of Turn four. White was involved in a race ending wreck on Lap 23, bring Hale into victory lane for the second night, sweeping the week.
The Beginner Bandolero B Feature brought chaos from start to finish. Early cautions shuffled the field, but Carter Kennedy maintained his lead throughout. Jordyn Whitford had the pace to compete with Kennedy throughout the majority of the race. Kennedy and Whitford exchanged the lead multiple times while maneuvering through lap traffic, and Kennedy was able to find his way to victory lane at the end of the race.
The A Feature, much like the B, gave the fans entertainment from start to finish. Multiple jumped restarts put Rob Brown at the front of the pack going into the start of the race. After a restart on Lap 3, Stetson Stroup was able to get around Brown for the race lead. Stroup maintained his race lead until a race restart on Lap 12, saw a strong run from Brown giving him back the race lead. The race was shown the pink flag when Brown took his lead and a caution shortly after ended the race with Brown the race winner.
The pink and white car of Kaitlyn Stradley got the lead early in the Chargers B feature, with James Herbert waiting for his opportunity to strike. An early restart added Austin Call into the mix, making it a three-car race for the chance to win. Looking to find a way to the front, Call makes contact to the back of Herbert on Lap 13, spinning him for a caution. A plethora of cautions kept Stradley honest, but the field ultimately couldn’t catch her as she led the entire race winning in impressive fashion.
The Chargers A Feature showcased the impressive long-run speed of Braden Scott. After gaining the lead on the first lap, he was able to stretch the gap between him and second place to almost a second long. Even with a caution with eight-to-go, Scott never faltered from the lead winning in dominant fashion.
The Pro Feature was postponed and rescheduling details will be released at later time. The Cook Out Summer Shootout will resume on Tuesday, June 16th with Round 3, and Round 4 will be on June 23rd. FloRacing will once again carry the action with coverage beginning at 5pm ET/2pm PT, with relays of the first two rounds available to watch now.
