How do you believe you have grown as a driver this asphalt season?

Certainly, the more competitive experience I am able to pile up, I feel like the better racer it makes me. I love chasing all the large events and competitive races to push me to perform at the highest levels of Legend car racing. Racing with some of the top NASCAR drivers at the Summer Shootout this summer definitely taught me many things. There is a fine line of aggression and pushing these cars to the limit while still being in total control and making smart decisions. Racing around some of those professionals showed me how to better balance that to be up there at the end of these competitive races. It was a lot of fun as well!

What track has best prepared you for Asphalt Nationals?

Racing out at the bullring a couple times already and having a notebook on setups definitely gives me an edge on heading back out west for the biggest race of the year again this year. Other racetracks such as Dominion in Virginia and Cordele motor speedway in South Georgia also can take credit for preparing me for these fast speeds, momentum-based racetracks like that of the bullring in Las Vegas. Between my driving experiences on these tracks and my wide range of setup notes for these large racetracks, I feel very well prepared for this year's Nationals race weekend.

What has been your most memorable moment in asphalt racing this season?

This season, I would probably have to circle back to winning some of those Summer Shootout races at Charlotte Motor Speedway. One race in particular, SVG and I crossed each other over a few times with me coming out on top. We had a great conversation in tech over how awesome the race was and I got a lot of satisfaction out of that win. Winning 8/10 Thursday Thunder races at my home track EchoPark Speedway was very cool as well. Racing there as long as I have and to have such a dominant season gave me a lot of satisfaction of my hard work paying off.

As the points leader, are you approaching Asphalt Nationals any differently compared to years past?

Absolutely zero differently at all. I have raced all year not worrying about the national points and just letting it all play out, why worry about it now? I feel like if I were to over think that at all, I could mess my weekend up drastically. I have wanted to win the Asphalt Nationals more than any other race for about a decade now and still have yet to pull it off. Got so close last year, I’m hungrier for that race than ever before. If I put all my effort into winning that race and pull it off, the national points will be there to follow. Simplifying the weekend and focusing on that one goal of winning the race I believe will give me the best opportunity in capturing the championship as well.

Joel Smith – Pro – 3rd – 1861 Points

Top 5’s: 25

Tracks: Auburndale Speedway, Charlotte Motor Speedway, Hickory Motor Speedway, Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway, Wake County Speedway

How do you believe you have grown as a driver this asphalt season?

This year I’ve learned more about car setup than ever before. Taking care of my own car instead of relying on a full-time crew chief has really helped me understand how every adjustment affects performance. It’s made me a better driver because I can now feel what the car needs and make those changes count on track. Working on my own car also makes me appreciate every lap a lot more. It’s a different kind of pride when you are the one working on your own car. If I tear the car up, there’s no crew waiting to bail me out, it’s on me and my dad to fix it. That’s made me more focused, more disciplined, and more grateful for every time I get behind the wheel.

What track has best prepared you for Asphalt Nationals?

I haven’t raced at a ton of big tracks this year that are comparable to Vegas, but if I had to pick one, it would probably be Highland Rim. I like it because you can move around and search for different lines, there’s always something to learn there. Really though, no track compares to the Bullring to me. It’s my absolute favorite track and I wish we had one in Charlotte to race at every week.

What has been your most memorable moment in asphalt racing this season?

Definitely Day 2 of Winter Nationals. I was running a 103 fever that week and managed to qualify on the pole. Before the race I was feeling really rough but looking back at the laps, we were incredibly consistent, probably the most consistent I’ve ever been in a race before. The car was absolutely perfect, honestly the best car I’ve ever drove and we ended up winning by two seconds over the field with the GOAT, Dennis Lambert, as my crew chief that week. I’ll never forget that day in my racing career.

2025 is your third year in the Pro Division. How have you evolved as a driver and person to position you in the best possible way to perform at this year’s Asphalt Nationals?

When I started in the Pro Division, I was 13, just one year out of Young Lions and now I’m 16. Looking back, 13-year-old me couldn’t have maximized the car the way I can today.  I’ve learned to get the most out of whatever I have, stay patient, make adjustments that matter and stay calm under pressure. Racing in the Pro Division against older, more experienced drivers has also taught me a lot about race craft and the type of driver I want to be. I’ve learned how my competitors race, what to expect from them, and how to hold my own in a tough field. When I first started, I had no idea how competitive the Pro class really was, but now I know how to race with patience, consistency, and confidence. Every race teaches me something new, and that’s what keeps me improving.

How do you believe you have grown as a driver this asphalt season?

This year I’ve grown my skills from going to struggling on the track on a weekly basis trying to figure out what worked best for me. It took over a year of trials but we finally figured it out and were able to claim multiple wins and historic venues like Nashville Fairgrounds and Charlotte Motor Speedway.

What track has best prepared you for Asphalt Nationals?

I’d probably say the best track that has prepared me for Vegas is likely Dominion or Southern National due to its high demand of throwing the car in and trusting the banking holds the car down.

What has been your most memorable moment in asphalt racing this season?

My most memorable moment on asphalt would probably be winning the Hickory Asphalt National this year, the oldest track in the country and such a hard place in the Legend Car against all of the best and we were able to stand high on top at the end of the day.

What would winning Asphalt Nationals as a West Coast driver at a West Coast track mean to you?

It would mean a lot to me coming from Southern California where there’s not a lot of racing like there used to be out there which makes us seek opportunity elsewhere a lot of time in different states and really motivates me to try showing that us Cali drivers love racing too.

How do you believe you have grown as a driver this asphalt season?

I have grown by being more focused on my goal to complete the masters and Golden Masters title. Was close in 2023, but tied and lost it on final lap at old dominion speedway by a tie in points.

What track has best prepared you for Asphalt Nationals?

Cordelle and Vegas

What has been your most memorable moment in asphalt racing this season?

Completing 7 wins in Thursday Thunder at Atlanta against great competitors

You’ve won Golden Masters Championships, but never at full Masters National Championship. Are you more or less nervous entering Asphalt Nationals this year being so high in points?

I simply never get nervous, but I must be completely focused on the final 20th race. At this point all my years of experience in racing comes down to this final race and there will be no room for any mistakes. God has blessed me at 78 years old to continue a love of racing in the INEX series and the support I have from many people in and around INEX would touch anyone’s heart to believe dreams can come true!!!

Kevin Rollins – Masters – 2nd – 1876 Points

State: Tennessee

Starts: 22

Wins: 18

Top 5’s: 21

Tracks: EchoPark Speedway, Highland Rim Speedway, Huntsville Speedway, Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway

How do you believe you have grown as a driver this asphalt season?

As a Masters driver most of us have years in the sport or some type of race car. As far as this year I have not gotten to race as much as years past with starting my own business and helping my dad that’s been battling cancer. So, I’d say this year I have tried to make every race count and did my best to avoid any issues. For the most part we have had a great year and won a lot of races still.

What track has best prepared you for Asphalt Nationals?

The closest track I have would be Cordell but we haven’t been able to really make it that far from home. So, I have done some testing locally and tried some things. But I do have some ideas on what we need to do to compete. We have our notes from last time and I qualified second.

What has been your most memorable moment in asphalt racing this season?

As far as memorable moments we did get away one weekend to Atlanta and was able to sweep both races. Wasn’t the quickest but we survived and proved you don’t always have to be the fastest.  Bill Plemons sure is the one to beat there.

Do you feel it is more difficult trying to defend your title compared to winning your first one?

As far as trying to defend winning the national championship. It would be nice to be able to do it again, last year we kinda lucked into it and had a great season but we lacked a little speed at Dominion. But I usually just race my race and let the chips fall where they may. If we win enough races, it usually will fall where we want it. Last time in Vegas I was a top 3 car and remember falling back with pedal issues when the MT09 first came out. Luckily, we haven’t had anything like that happen since.

State: Colorado

Starts: 36

Wins: 16

Top 5’s: 33

Tracks: Colorado Speedway, Hawkeye Downs Speedway, Hi-Way 92 Raceway Park, Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway, Suika Circuit, The Bullring at Las Vegas, Tucson Speedway

How do you believe you have grown as a driver this asphalt season?

This is my 23rd season racing Legend Cars and it could be the best season of all of them.  The success builds off of prior years but my focus and consistency as a driver is better than in past years.

What track has best prepared you for Asphalt Nationals?

I have raced at The Bullring a number of times this year and our home track of Colorado National Speedway with our good car counts aids in preparation for the big event.

What has been your most memorable moment in asphalt racing this season?

I’ve had a few big ones this year with a win at the Spring Nationals, but the biggest was finally getting my first feature win at Colorado National Speedway.

What is a lesson The Bullring at LVMS has taught you as a driver that helps you ahead of this year’s Asphalt Nationals?

The facility is so smooth, fast and very technical. With those things, the speeds are very fast, requiring you to stay alert because things can go from good to bad very quickly.

Taylor Mayhew – Young Lions – T-1st – 1900 Points

State: California

Wins: 32

Top 5’s: 34

Tracks: All American Speedway, Colorado National Speedway, Evergreen Speedway, Kevin Harvick's Kern Raceway, Orange Show Speedway, Stockton 99 Speedway, The Bullring at Las Vegas, Tucson Speedway

How do you believe you have grown as a driver this asphalt season?

How I believe I have grown as a race car driver throughout the season is I feel like I have got a lot better at telling the crew what the car is doing and also I have been getting better at adjusting to the car if it's not super good.

What track has best prepared you for Asphalt Nationals?

The track that prepared me most for the nationals this year is Vegas, because that is where nationals will be.

What has been your most memorable moment in asphalt racing this season?

My most memorable moment this year has to be the cars tour West racing in colorado when I ended up winning.

What would winning Asphalt Nationals as a West Coast driver at a West Coast track mean to you?

Winning nationals as a west coast driver at a west coast track would be huge for me just because this is what we’ve been working for all year.

How do you believe you have grown as a driver this asphalt season?

I think I have grown as a driver this season just by getting out of my comfort zone in some situations and just sending it. Willie with Three Sixteen Motorsports has always told me one thing, when in doubt throttle out! It’s paid off more often than not.

What track has best prepared you for Asphalt Nationals?

The track I think has best prepared me for nationals was Charlotte at the Summer Shootout as it is essentially the same competition as I will have at Vegas for nationals.

What has been your most memorable moment in asphalt racing this season?

The most memorable moment this season was definitely my last lap win at the Summer Shootout. It is just such a huge event and we worked really hard as a team to try to go get it done.

Did your expectations at the start of 2025 match up to you having a near perfect season leading into Asphalt Nationals?

Our goal this year was to get a national championship and with all of the Three Sixteen Motorsports crew determination and hard work we are going into Vegas with 1900 points looking strong going into nationals.  I always want to take a moment to thank God for this opportunity, my family for their support, Willie at Three Sixteen Motorsports, and all of our incredible partners.

Dylan Bongiovanni – Young Lions – 4th – 1888 Points

State: Georgia

Starts: 43

Wins: 16

Top 5’s: 35

Tracks: All American Speedway, Anderson Motor Speedway, Auburndale Speedway, Cordele Motor Speedway, EchoPark Speedway, Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway, Redwood Acres, Shasta Speedway, Stockton 99 Speedway

How do you believe you have grown as a driver this asphalt season?

I’ve definitely grown a lot as a driver this season. I’ve learned there’s no friends on the track to race everybody the same even if they’re your friend off the track. I’ve learned that being aggressive is very important to being successful and races. and most importantly I’ve learned to trust God throughout everything that happens.

What track has best prepared you for Asphalt Nationals?

I’d have to say Cordele motor Speedway has prepared me the most for asphalt nationals as the track is similar and you race with both young lions and semi pro so you’re racing with drivers with a little bit more experience

What has been your most memorable moment in asphalt racing this season?

My most memorable moment. This season has to be the first and second Thursday thunder races. I led all of the first race just to get wrecked on the last lap going into turn three. I was pretty mad, but I did not let that discourage me. It actually motivated me to go win next week which I did.

You’ve raced on the West Coast a few times in 2025. What have those trips taught you ahead of Asphalt Nationals?

The national races I’ve attended across the West Coast have taught me if you’re not driving as aggressively as you can you will not be racing in a top position. I’ve also learned that one tiny mistake can ruin your whole race. If you make a mistake somebody will for sure capitalize on it.
