Jensen Jorgensen had come close to winning a Boston Reid & CO Pro race in 2023, but had yet sealed the deal. In Tuesday’s Round 6 Cook Out Summer Shootout race at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Jorgensen started on pole but slipped back to fourth in the opening laps. The leaders mixed it up at the front diligently and Jorgensen’s day nearly came to an end when Jake Bollman suffered an issue on the Lap 11 restart. The stalling car of Bollman stacked up Alex McCollum and Jorgensen.

As a result of a lap not being completed, Jorgensen was handed the lead as McCollum had to pit to fix his hood. On the second Lap 11 restart attempt, Jorgensen got away but the caution came out again on Lap 14. On the restart, Jorgensen was shoved by Ethan Nascimento. This sent Jorgensen backward once again with Nick Woodall taking over second. Suddenly, Donovan Strauss and Jake Tretow crashed, bringing the field to another restart. Another quick caution came out and the race ended under the yellow and checkered flags.

Nascimento and Woodall collided in turns three and four, running in first and second. They spun, allowing Jorgensen through and was declared the winner, followed by Cameron Bolin and Ethan Norfleet.

Aggression was the word of the race in the Round 6 VP Racing Fuels Semi-Pro feature. Mason Lastra came away with the victory, his second of the 2023 Summer Shootout, but survived and avoid the bumper all at the same time. One several restarts, Lastra wasn’t shy about putting his car to a competitor’s inside in an attempt to secure second after assisting the driver in front with a push.

On the first Lap 9 restart attempt, George Phillips overshot the entry of turn one and crashed, along with a few others, sending a strong car to the rear. This left Jesse Martinez, Brody Gunter, Lastra, and Lucas Vera the top four on the second Lap 9 restart. Lastra followed Gunter’s pass on Martinez on Lap 10, following Gunter’s bump on Martinez. Lastra attempted the bump and run against Gunter on Lap 15, but Gunter held a firm wheel.

Lastra took the lead from Gunter a few laps later, before overcooking his entry to turn one and handing the lead back to Gunter. In the next corner, Lastra wasn’t shy about giving Gunter a shot in the rear, and soon returned to the lead. Lastra survived a one-lap shootout to win, followed by Vera and Gunter.

Bryson Nichols won the first four Beginner Bandolero A features and was swiftly elevated to the Bandits Division in Round 5. He finished fourth in that race. He returned to victory lane in Tuesday’s Round 6 Bandits race, taking home his fifth first place trophy of the summer.

Nichols trailed LaQuan McCoy early as Nichols battled Jack Smith and Colt Johnson for second. Once he secured second, the distance between McCoy’s Bandolero and Nichols’ closed. A mixture of McCoy’s loose condition and Nichols’ excellent rotation through the corners helped the black and yellow Bando take the lead on Lap 15.

Johnson eventually took second and tried to track down Nichols but came up short and had to settle for the second podium step, with McCoy finishing third.

It was another banner night for the Old Armor Beer Co. Masters Division. For the second night in a row, the race went caution-free. Carl Cormier benefited from the invert and started on pole. From there he held the lead from Lap 1 to Lap 25. It wasn’t easy by any means. Mark Green looked to have a faster car, but raced Cormier with respect. A few times Green could have pushed the issue, particularly in lapped traffic, but cut Cormier a break each time.

Cormier’s car was just fast enough off the corners to never allow Green to get close enough, but more importantly, he didn’t make a mistake behind the wheel. Cormier captured his first Masters win of 2023, Green finished second, and Dwayne Holder finished third.

The Young Lions feature was cut short, completing only 13 laps. Bumpers banged and cars spun, causing several cautions. By Lap 6, Keelan Harvick found himself in the lead and led a single file field back to green. Bobby Gossett nudged Harvick, sending him into the second groove. This sent Harvick back to fourth when fifth place Garrett Erwin cut Harvick a break. The field cross under the flag stand to start Lap 12 and the time flag was displayed. Two laps later, Hunter Jordan, Kai Johnson, and Katie Yonchuck collided and drew a caution. Gossett was declared the winner, his first Summer Shootout win in a Legend Car, with Ryan Zima finishing second and Nathan Lyons in third.

Killian McMann finished second 10 times in 2023 without a victory before entering the Round 6 Bojangles Outlaws race, but that changed Tuesday night. McMann finally captured his maiden victory of the season after starting from pole. Several restarts later, he was standing on the Cook Out Summer Shootout stage a winner after holding off all challenges after being declared the winner under the checkered and yellow flag.

The “Cook Out Special” Bandolero, Roo Reaves, has had speed dating back to Winter Nationals and had scored a pair of second place finishes before the Round 6 Beginner Bandolero A Feature. He finally scored a victory, outpacing Round 5 winner Gerald White III for the win. James Behnke was the Beginner Bandolero B Feature winner, even after spinning from the lead.
