There wasn’t much the field could do catch Alex McCollum in the Boston Reid & CO. Pro Division points battle at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Tuesday night during the 10th and final Cook Out Summer Shootout round of 2023. No one told the field of racers that, as the racing the 19-car field displayed was some of the best all summer long! Up front, it was all Jake Bollman with a strong fighting spirit coming from Cameron Bolin, who needed every point as he chased McCollum.

The race had a quick caution for a pair of spins in turn two and during the restart on Lap 2, Bollman pulled away as Joel Smith was sandwiched in the middle of three-wide with Justice Calabro on his outside and Bolin on his inside. Bolin cleared them but Jadyn Daniels filled the gap, keeping Smith and Calabro three-wide. Smith bailed and continued the fight from sixth.

Points leader McCollum moved into fourth a lap before the caution flew again on Lap 5. Bolin got right to Bollman’s bumper on the restart and the pair scooted down the backstretch, with Bollman inching away. The lead didn’t grow to much before Bollman slipped entering turn one, allowing Bolin to suck right up to his bumper, even showing his nose down the back stretch. One lap later, Bolin was once again all over Bollman’s rear bumper but the caution flew.

Bollman launched well at the restart line and was clear all around entering turn one with 12 laps completed. While Bolin held onto second, McCollum ran eighth.

The laps clicked away and Bollman stretched his lead out over Bolin, eventually capturing his third Cook Out Summer Shootout win of the summer. McCollum finished eighth and was enough to take the 2023 Boston Reid & CO. Pro Division title!

The Round 10 Old Armor Beer Co. Masters Division Feature went by in a flash. Going green to checkers, Mark Green walked away with the championship. His only competition, Lee Jordan, started from pole and led the first four laps of the race before dropping to second after Dwayne Holder bumped him into turn one.

Holder checked out, leaving Jordan to fend for himself. Three laps later, Josh Mullins shoved Jordan and it wasn’t until he found a hole between fifth and seventh that Jordan fell back in line.

The running order stayed more or less the same as the leaders weaved their way through slower traffic. Holder was a straightaway ahead of Mullins by the white flag with Green slotted in third. The win was Holder’s third of the summer and simply by finishing ahead of Jordan, secured Green the 2023 Masters Division title.

The VP Racing Fuels Semi-Pro Championship was decided before the drop of the green flag. George Phillips captured enough points over his competition in the first nine rounds to clinch the championship simply by starting. Phillips led the race early, battling for the lead with Mason Lastra and Jesse Martinez.

Lastra shoved Phillips off turn two during the restart on Lap 9, taking the lead. Phillips eventually was passed by Brody Gunter and Parker Traves. Later on Lap 16, Gunter locked up entering turn one, allowing both Traves and Phillips by and settled into fourth.

Crossing the finish line first was Lastra, but in post-race inspection, he was disqualified. This elevated second-place Traves to become the winner of the Round 10 feature. Phillips finished second and Gunter third after the results were adjusted.

Points leader Jackson Denton control his own destiny when the Round 10 UNC-Charlotte Young Lions feature went green. After qualifying points were added, he held a 14-point advantage over second-place Nathan Lyons. Denton rolled off second with Keelan Harvick on pole and wasted no time taking the lead. Harvick was the leader off turn two, clear of Denton, but was bumped out of the way by Denton who led Lap 1. The caution then flew for Evan McKnight and Max Reaves, who both got turned around in turn four.

On the restart, Denton maintained control until he went wide in turn four on Lap 3 pushing him back to third. Ryan Zima claimed control and Neal Dulin moved into second. Unexpectedly, Lyons suffered an issue while running sixth. He would fall back to ninth.

A series of cautions separated this moment for Lyons and the one that severely hurt his championship hopes. On Lap 9 he was involved in a four-car crash in turn one. He would continue but wouldn’t break back into the top 10 and ultimately finished 12th.

While Zima was mathematically eligible to win the championship, second place wouldn’t be enough, especially with Denton taking home the win. Denton reclaimed the lead on Lap 22 just before the caution flew. The race was declared over due to time limits. It was Denton’s fifth win of the summer at Charlotte and secured the UNC-Charlotte Young Lions Championship for the Floridian.

The Bojangles Outlaws championship came down to Ben Morabito and Alison Johnson. Johnson needed nine points over Morabito in order to capture the championship, but TJ Moon gave her the biggest challenge of the of the summer. TJ Moon masterfully kept her behind him.

With Johnson stuck in second, Ben Morabito ran comfortably in third. However, it wasn’t an easy third place running for him. He received challenges from Ellie Gossett and Owen Zacharias. Right as Morabito was pinned on the outside, a caution would be displayed for a spin. Those cautions saved Morabito from falling back in the running order and shrinking his lead over Johnson.

Once enough cautions were displayed, the restarts became single file. This played into Morabito’s advantage more than anyone, as it allowed him to be unchallenged on the outside. Johnson wasn’t able to find the right opportunity to pass Moon and no one challenged Morabito for third. With Moon taking home the race victory, Johnson finishing second, and Morabito finishing third, the 2023 Bojangles Outlaws Championship was Morabito’s.

After taking the points lead after Round 9, LaQuan McCoy had an eight-point gap over Jack Smith in the Bandits Division championship. Smith received one more qualifying point than McCoy, making the lead a mere seven points. Pole sitter Wyatt Coffey, fresh off his Thursday Thunder Championship, he was largely uncontested for the lead of the race.

Jack Smith was strong enough to take second from McCoy and retain it with little challenge from behind. McCoy however, furiously held off challenges from Matthew Laprade. Laprade later faded and had to battle Bryson Nichols. Their battle allowed McCoy to pull away and as laps clicked away, the gap between him and fourth grew with Smith maintain second behind Coffey, who would go on to win.

The victory was Coffey’s third-straight Cook Out Summer Shootout Bandits feature win and McCoy’s third-place finish was enough to elevate him to the Bandits Championship!

In the Night Owl Beginner Bandolero A Feature, Cullen Hutchison took the victory in only his fourth start on a paved oval. He had a challenge from Tuggie Case, but when Case slipped Hutchison pulled away. Gerald White III tagged the rear of Case’s Bandolero spinning him around, collecting Corbin Cannon. On the restart, Roman Petrino restarted second, but Hutchison’s bumper soon was out of reach and won by over five car lengths.

John Gauge Kimler won the Night Owl Beginner Bandolero B Feature over Charlee Hutchins. Hutchins drove to within striking distance of Kimler a few times, however, wasn’t able to make a clean attempt for the lead.

The Cook Out Summer Shootout will return in June 2024 at America’s Home for Racing!
